Nov. 1, 2014, was just a regular day to some people but to the community of Forest County Potawatomi it was a day to exercise their right to vote and to voice their choice. This year’s open positions on executive council were vice chairman, secretary, and treasurer for a term of two years.
Nov. 3, 2014, was the day of witness for the community as each elected official would be sworn in.
As people gathered in the FCP Tribal Court, Judge Jeryl L. Perenich entered the courtroom to discuss the importance of these positions. She emphasized the word “allegiance” and what that word really means while taking a position or office. She stated, “Allegiance is loyalty or the obligation of loyalty, as to a nation, sovereign, or cause.” After this important message was shared with the new and re-elected members of council, she proceeded to swear each member in to office. Each took the oath for his/her respective position and promised to uphold the words that he/she spoke.
The elected officials for this coming year are Vice Chairman Hartford Shegonee, Secretary Lorna Shawano, and Treasurer Richard Gougé III.
Congratulations to all the newly elected council members on behalf of the Potawatomi Traveling Times. Official results of the 2014 elections are shown at right.
